When GP presenter of ‘The Nature
of Healing Series’ Dr Serene Lim decided to renovate her house, she came across bamboo
flooring. Not only was it a beautiful hard-wearing surface but it seemed an intelligent
choice because of it’s environmentally friendly qualities. After a year of research,
she realized that like any hardwood, there are many grades of bamboo flooring. So she
went to China twice and was impressed with a Singapore run factory in southern China.
Satisfied with it’s good management and new german technology, she decided to import
bamboo flooring into Australia. Her accountant husband Nick Ward suggested a way to make
it more affordable by selling the flooring direct to the public with large discounts for
bulk orders. They teamed up with Rick Duncan and Greg Nibbs of New Earth enterprises who
have 30 years experience in managing their landscaping and permaculture business.

Dr Serene spent two
years being owner-builder of her house renovations and is thrilled with the
flooring. In particular, bamboo comes prepolished so there was no mess to clean
up. With two teenaged sons and their numerous friends, it was essential that
the flooring is easy to maintain. Her Noosa-style home is in the coastal suburb of
Swanbourne in Western Australia. She wanted a relaxed beach style where the
family would feel they were on holiday every day of the year.
The house is flooded with natural light and the particular dimensions of her bamboo
flooring being longer and wider than average gives her home a spacious,
generous feeling, reminiscent of gracious Australian homes. As this unique
flooring was specially designed for her Australian home, she has called it
Noosawood and it is now their best selling flooring, occupying 80% of their
sales. She used a darker caramel Noosawood in the parents studio hideaway
upstairs and a lighter caramel in the lounge room to create an airy, light ambience.
